What Is Parkinson’s Disease?
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition that affects movement, balance, and communication. It’s most often diagnosed in older adults, but Young Onset Parkinson’s (diagnosed before age 50) also occurs.
While there is currently no cure, therapy can significantly improve day-to-day life, reduce risk of complications, and help preserve independence over time.
Signs and Symptoms
Early symptoms may be subtle—like a change in handwriting, trouble sensing touch, or dropping items. Over time, symptoms can progress and may include:
- Tremors in hands, fingers, or limbs
- Slowed movement (bradykinesia)
- Difficulty with balance or walking
- Muscle stiffness and restricted range of motion
- Poor posture or small involuntary spasms
- Changes in voice or facial expression
- Trouble swallowing (dysphagia)
- Fatigue or increased need for assistance with daily activities
Each person’s experience with Parkinson’s is different. Our therapy team takes the time to understand your journey and tailor your care accordingly.
