What Is a Concussion?
A concussion is a brain injury that occurs when a significant impact to the head, neck, or body causes the brain to move rapidly inside the skull. This disrupts normal brain cell function and reduces blood flow, resulting in temporary changes in how the brain works.
Concussions do not always involve a loss of consciousness. Common symptoms include:
- Headache or pressure in the head
- Dizziness or balance problems
- Nausea or vomiting
- Sensitivity to light or noise
- Difficulty concentrating or remembering
- Fatigue or feeling foggy
- Neck pain
- Changes in sleep or mood
If you or someone you know has experienced a blow to the head and is showing any of these symptoms, seek care from a trained healthcare professional as soon as possible. Early evaluation is one of the strongest predictors of a smooth recovery.
Concussion Treatment
Following a concussion, early and appropriate care leads to better outcomes. Our therapists provide a comprehensive, individualized treatment program designed to address your specific symptoms and support a safe return to your normal activities.
For the first 24 to 48 hours after injury, a period of relative rest is generally recommended. After that initial window, a gradual and supervised return to activity is the most effective path forward. If symptoms persist beyond 7 to 10 days, a structured rehabilitation program should be started.
Our concussion care services include:
- Physical and cognitive evaluation
- Vestibular and balance rehabilitation
- Vision rehabilitation
- Exercise-based rehabilitation
- Manual therapy for neck pain and whiplash
- Return-to-learn and return-to-work planning
- Return-to-sport progression
- Patient and family education
Pre-Season Baseline Testing
Baseline concussion testing is a series of physical and cognitive assessments performed before the start of a sport season or activity. The results create a personal snapshot of how your brain functions when healthy.
If a concussion occurs, we compare your post-injury results to your baseline to understand where deficits exist and how significant they are. This gives your care team a more precise picture of your recovery, and a clearer signal for when you are truly ready to return to play.
Our testing evaluates balance, reaction time, memory, visual tracking, and other key brain functions, combining multiple evidence-based tools to provide the most complete assessment available.
Our Evidence-Based Approach
Our concussion care protocols are grounded in the most current scientific research and clinical guidelines. Several of our therapists have completed advanced certification training in concussion management, equipping them to provide comprehensive, standardized care from evaluation through return to activity.
