What Is a Stroke?
A stroke happens when blood flow to the brain is disrupted, causing brain cells to become damaged or die. The effects of a stroke vary depending on the type, severity, and area of the brain involved.
Types of Stroke:
Ischemic Stroke
This is the most common type of stroke, caused by a blocked artery—often due to a blood clot—cutting off blood flow to part of the brain.
Hemorrhagic Stroke
This type occurs when an artery bursts, leading to bleeding in or around the brain. The pressure from the leaking blood can damage surrounding tissue.
Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)
Often called a “mini-stroke,” a TIA temporarily blocks blood flow to the brain, usually for less than five minutes. TIAs are urgent warning signs of a potential major stroke in the future.
How a Stroke Can Affect the Body
The results of a stroke vary from person to person, but common challenges may include:
- Weakness or paralysis (often on one side)
- Muscle stiffness or spasticity
- Fatigue
- Loss of balance or coordination
- Difficulty concentrating or processing information
- Speech or language challenges
- Vision or sensory changes
- Trouble with reading, writing, or comprehension
