Incontinence Truths and Tips!

Did you know…1/3 of Americans, men and women, suffer from incontinence. It is a common issue, but does not need to be the norm.

Many physical therapists can help and reduce your reliance on absorbent products, medications or even catheters. Kegals are a set of exercises that help to strengthen the pelvic floor and can work for both men and women. The pelvic floor muscles can be activated by doing that action as if you are stopping the flow of urine. Disclaimer: this should only be done to assess where the pelvic muscles are and should not be preformed more than 1-2x to reduce urinary retention or infection.

Exercise: complete 10 quick pelvic floor contractions with holds for 3 seconds. Then transition to longer holds of 10 second pelvic floor contractions for 10 reps. Do these 4-5x a day. Do these contractions as well during times of that cause incontinence such as jumping, running, lifting or sneezing. Working on these will improve strength and reduce leakage in all areas of life! Stay healthy everyone!
